خزانه ها / Treasury of Gems and Jewelry

Another section of the Cultural Institute of Museums at Mostazafan Foundation is the Treasury of Gems and Jewelry. The items in this treasury include all kinds of ancient and contemporary jewelry, mounted gemstones, loose gemstones, and any object, made of precious metals or valuable gems, which beautify people and their environment.

The word "jewel" is defined by Dehkhoda Persian Dictionary as follows: "a precious stone, such as diamond, ruby, emerald, etc." (Dehkhoda, 7894) In this sense, "jewel" is synonymous with "gem". So, Jewelry knowledge is basically knowledge of precious stones (gems) or precious minerals. Jewelry is usually made of precious metals, and these metals add to the value of the jewelry.

Gems and jewelry are part of the identity and wealth of any country and their value cannot be overestimated. In this treasury there are objects from different eras, each having a story or narrative of its time.

The term "jewelry" indicates the concept of beautification and thus refers more to the decorative rather than structural nature of making different objects, encompassing a variety of ornamental items. Jewelry in general is a collection of objects, utensils, and accessories used to decorate a person, place, or device.

In accordance with the definitions given above for "gem" and "jewelry", the title "Gems and Jewelry" was chosen for this treasury.

The oldest object in this treasury dates back to 2500 BC (is about 4500 years old) and the newest item is more than forty years old. These objects have signs or symbols indicative of historical, cultural, political and social conditions of their time. In this treasury there are antiquities and jewelry, made by artists who have created the objects with their own special artistic taste and creativity using basic and very simple tools. This antique jewelry collection includes necklaces made of glass paste or clay.

The objects in this treasury are divided into different categories according to their use. So, there is jewelry for personal use, different kinds of sculptures, utensils, home decorations, seals and signs, etc. each with a different application or purpose.

The total number of objects in this treasury is about 9000 items, which are grouped in the above-mentioned categories.
